Warren County Public Schools :


 

Under the leadership of Superintendent Pamela McGinnis, Warren County Public Schools (WCPS) continue to strive for excellence, most recently opening the newly built and newly renovated, state-of-the-art Skyline and Warren County High Schools.  WCPS operates 7 fully accredited schools under the Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia:  5 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 2 high schools.

§  Graduation rate 92.5% (per Commonwealth of Virginia ratings);

§  Over 57% earned Advanced Diplomas;

§  44% of graduating class was enrolled in Advanced Placement classes;

§  72% of graduates planned to enroll in two- and four-year colleges;

§  85% of graduates intended to participate in continuing education, including military;

§  41% of graduates completed a career and technical education program.

 

 Student Opportunities :


♦  160 credit courses are offered in grades 8-12;

♦  61 Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses are offered, of which 23 lead to industry certifications;

♦  Mountain Vista Governor’s School for Math, Science and Technology for gifted students in a research-based, technology-enhanced, integrated program in Mathematics, Science, and the Humanities that allows students to earn approximately 30 hours of college credit each year through dual enrollment.

♦ Students may also choose to take Advanced Placement examinations;

Dual enrollment at Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) allows high school students to enroll in on site classes such as biology, English, French, history, information technology networking, marketing, mathematics, music, philosophy, psychology, and Spanish and earn simultaneous high school and college credits.

Award-Winning School System :


♦  A..S. Rhodes Elementary, Hilda J. Barbour Elementary, and Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary Schools received the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence in 2008;

♦  A.S. Rhodes Elementary and Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary schools earned the State Board of Education’s VIP Excellence Award;

♦  Hilda J. Barbour Elementary School earned the State Board of Education’s VIP Competence to Excellence Award in 2008;

♦  The Region IV Superintendents’ Study Group named Superintendent Pamela McGinnis 2007 Superintendent of the Year.  Region IV encompasses 20 school divisions in Northern Virginia.

Warren County Public Schools are fully accredited.

In January 2011 Warren County High School was awarded the Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award which is presented to schools and divisions that achieve excellence goals and far exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards.



Technology :


Warren County is well invested in integrating state-of-the-art technology in its schools.

 

♦  WCPS has 2,500 computers.  Each school has a mobile computer lab consisting of 25 laptops, wireless hub, and printer;

♦  The backbone of the WCPS network is gigabit Ethernet, and the bandwidth of the wide area network allows schools to access voice, video and data;

♦  WCPS uses Moodle as an online learning tool;

♦  Classrooms at Warren County High School and Skyline High School are equipped with interactive Smartboards and ceiling-mounted projectors.  Each high school has a distance learning classroom;

♦  87 educators in WCPS have completed the National Education Technology Standards for Teachers, and 33 are currently working toward certification.


Pre-Engineering :


Beginning in 2008-09, Project Lead the Way (PLTW), a national program, will offer WCPS students pre-engineering classes.  An advisory group comprised of members from the school and business, industrial and higher education communities has been formed to interface with PLTW and teachers on problem-solving and instruction of the curriculum.
